La regina visse a circa 120 Km da Sana'a, capitale dello Yemen.
La REGINA di SABA
Sempre secondo la leggenda, la Regina regnava su un dominio di grande ricchezza, oggi questo non sembrerebbe possibile in una terra così desolata e arida. Fu costruito un grandioso sistema d’irrigazione che fece del deserto un giardino, l’acqua proveniva dalla grandiosa diga di Marib, lunga 640 metri ed alta 11 situata in pieno deserto in fondo allo Wadi Adhana. Gli archeologi hanno scoperto che la diga, di cui ancora è evidente la struttura, sia stata costruita nel sesto secolo avanti Cristo, cioè 400 anni dopo il leggendario regno di Saba, ma sono state scoperte tracce di una precedente struttura più antica di qualche centinaia di anni.
Chi era realmente la regina di Saba, era solo una figura mitica?
Se fosse così, cosa ha alimentato l’incredibile leggenda che la circonda?
Gli arabi la conoscevano come la regina Bilquis, gli etiopi la chiamavano Macheda, per gli ebrei e i cristiani è la regina di Saba. La regina venne a conoscenza della fama di Salomone e si recò a Gerusalemme per conoscerne la saggezza. Arrivò con un gran seguito e con cammelli carichi di spezie. La storia della regina di Saba probabilmente ha origini giudee, ma esiste anche una versione persiana, la troviamo anche nel Corano difatti gli arabi affermano che credesse nella grandezza di Halla.
In nessuna parte del Mondo la leggenda della regina di Saba è più viva che in Etiopia. Per questo popolo rappresenta il mito fondamentale della loro civiltà. La storia tramanda che Saba, regina di Axum, aveva sentito decantare la saggezza del re Salomone e volle fargli visita per mettere alla prova la sua sapienza proverbiale.
Dalla visita a Gerusalemme, avvenuta tra il 1000 ed il 950 a.C. vi è menzione nel Talmud ebraico, nella Bibbia - Antico Testamento, nel Corano ed ovviamente nel Kebra Nagast, Gloria dei re che è il libro fondamentale per la storia dell'impero degli altopiani, elaborato in Etiopia nel XIV secolo.
La storia dice che la regina di Saba recatasi dal potente re Salomone per sottoporgli alcuni enigmi per sondare le capacità tanto decantate del sovrano, ne rimase affascinata. Dall'unione del re Salomone con la regina, fu concepito Menelik, il cui significato intrinseco è "Figlio dell'uomo saggio" che portava nel sangue le tracce di una ascendenza divina e che sarebbe stato il capostipite di una stirpe salomonica; da qui nasce il fatto che gli Etiopi siano una un popolo eletto. Menelik, cresciuto e divenuto re, fece proprio il simbolo del leone di Giuda che innalzò a simbolo del proprio regno. Divenuto adulto, volle far visita al presunto padre Salomone e quando fece ritorno ad Axum, trafugò o gli fu affidata, l'Arca dell'Alleanza.
Essa non arrivò con Menelik ad Axum, ma impiegò qualche secolo dopo un lento peregrinare in terra d'Egitto. Questo avvenimento è ricordato con i lenti ed esasperanti riti che la Chiesa Copta etiopica celebra in onore dell'Arca in occasione di Ghenna e Timkat che sono il Natale e l'Epifania del rito copto. Le feste di celebrazione di queste due ricorrenze fanno rivivere lo splendore di quelle che furono le corti di Gerusalemme ed di Axum.
La regina visse a circa 120 Km da Sana'a, capitale dello Yemen. Ad est di Sana’a, a Marib che era la capitale dell’antica Saba. Marib era situata nel punto in cui si incrociavano le carovane che trasportavano incenso in direzione del mar Rosso e l’intera regione con il passare degli anni, a causa dei fortunati e fiorenti commerci, prese il nome di Arabia Felix. Poche le tracce nella città per svelare il mistero che circonda la regina di Saba, se veramente è esistita si pensa che possa essere vissuta a Marib, al centro del deserto, circondata dallo splendore di grandi templi e palazzi.
| A quattro Km. da Marib ci sono delle colonne (cinque) che si ergono dal deserto, le colonne fanno parte del tempio di Bar’an, per la gente del posto è il tempio della regina di Saba e le colonne fossero il sostegno posteriore del trono della regina, era un tempio sabeo devoto ad Almaqah, Dio della Luna. Molto meglio conservato ma completamente insabbiato, è il tempio Mahran Bilquis (otto colonne) riportato alla luce nel 1952, quando iniziarono degli scavi. Gli archeologi ne scoprirono l’entrata e la sagoma di una grande struttura che probabilmente aveva nell’antichità un tetto piatto di bronzo, il tempio aveva la forma di un’enorme ellisse di 117 metri di larghezza. |

Socotra si conferma la zona di navigazione più pericolosa al mondo per i velisti. Come ampiamente illustrato all'interno del blog non sono gli abitanti di Socotra ma i Pirati Somali, che a volte fanno sponda su Socotra, a sferrare gli attacchi alle imbarcazioni.

Without doubt this is the most reluctant editorial I have ever written, one during which I know that all cruising sailors who set off to follow sunsets around the world will be mourning the deaths of four of our ilk who have come to an untimely – and unexpected – death at the hands of Somali pirates. Unexpected, because we all thought they just wanted ransom.
The broad facts are clear. Nineteen pirates were aboard the Quest with the crew - Scott Adam, his wife Jean, of Orange County, California; and Phyllis Mackay and Bob Riggle, of Seattle, Washington – when they were being forced to sail from the point of their seajacking – 190 nautical miles southeast of Masirah Island in Oman - to Somalia. Four U.S. Navy warships were trailing them: USS Enterprise, an aircraft carrier; Guided Missile Cruiser Leyte Gulf; and Guided Missile Destroyers Sterett and Buckley.
Two pirates came on board the Sterett to negotiate, and remained overnight. The next morning at around 8.00am a rocket propelled grenade was fired at the Sterett, and small arms fire was heard immediately afterwards from the yacht. Following that 13 pirates moved onto the bow with their hands up in surrender. SEALs sped to the yacht, finding four pirates below decks, two of them dead. They killed the other two, one with a gunshot, one with a knife. The four American sailors had already been shot. Two were already dead, and first aid was administered to the two who were still alive. They died shortly after. These are the facts, but two major questions remain. Question 1 is about the pirates's actions. The facts seem to indicate that there was an altercation between the pirates. So was this a cold-blooded killing of the four cruising sailors, perhaps by

instruction from ashore? Or was it an act of panic by twitchy pirates because they were being followed by the four American ships? The difference IS important, because if it is the former it raises the general state of piracy in the area to a whole new level. Published ad hoc pirate statements after the incident can be discounted as normal 'gung-ho' responses, from pirates unassociated with the incident. It also raises questions about the fate of South African cruising sailors Deborah Calitz and Bruno Pelizzari, still in the hands of Somalis in Somalia. Question 2 concerns the Quest: Why did the crew of the Quest, confirmed to be unarmed, and having specifically joined a rally in order to take them through the pirate zone, suddenly depart the rally? According to Peter Seymour of the Blue Water Rally, the Quest decided to split from the rally on 15th February. According to friends of the Adams, why they would do this is a mystery, yet to be answered. Sail-World Cruising joins the rest of the cruising world in mourning for the lost sailors, the first such deadly incident in the long sordid history of piracy in waters surrounding Somalia. Pirates kill four Americans aboard hijacked yacht
The U.S. Central Command issued a statement today that four American sailors have been killed by Somali pirates aboard their hijacked yacht, the SV Quest in the Indian Ocean. The four Americans were round the world cruisers, yacht owners Scott and Jean Adam of Marina del Rey, California, and Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle of Seattle, Washington. The four were sailing along with the Blue Water Rally, before heading off on their own a week ago. Organizers of the rally said the four were sailing toward Salallah in Oman. The Somali pirates had hijacked the yacht last Friday and had been steering it toward the Somali coast, with four U.S. Navy warships trailing and observing the vessel for approximately three days. A U.S. Navy board party stormed the yacht after hearing gunfire. 'Despite immediate steps to provide life-saving care, all four hostages ultimately died of their wounds,' Central Command said in a statement. Central Command believes 19 pirates were involved in the hijacking of the long range cruiser, reporting that fifteen pirates were taken into US military custody.

The navy reported that two pirates were killed in the confrontation while two other pirates were found dead aboard the yacht. Four US warships had been used in response to the hijacking. Gen James Mattis, commander of US Central Command, said: 'We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest.' The UK's Foreign Office amongst others advises against all but essential travel by yacht and leisure craft on the high seas in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and part of the north-west Indian Ocean. It describes piracy as a 'significant' and 'frequent' threat in these areas.
